Enam Gbewonyo Black Women’s Visibility, One Pantyhose at a Time

Enam Gbewonyo spiralling oculus – “The Third Eye” 2019 of handknitted and stitched used and new nylon pantyhose speaks to the sensuality of the female form, representing the bondage that constricts the black woman to fit into racist ideals that doesn’t serve her being. She’s found her own shade of nude beauty, and says goodbye to a product that has shielded black women from the reality of their invisibility. Each pair of her plaited pantyhose exhibited represents the ways black women are influenced by such prejudices that make them invisible.

Unbinding herself from the many forces that once inhibited her being, she’s confident in her own nude shade to occupy a space as her true self.
